I love it for exposing science terms turning into advertising buzz words…which is a fancy way of saying: lying. And at $190.00 an ounce, this isn't pocket change that these guys are trying to extract from us.

Now Amatokin by Voss Laboratories is claiming to use stem cell technology in their anti-aging cream. Except on closer inspection…well, frankly, they don't. This is another bogus product that is causing the Marketing Director Gina Gay to backpedal considerably when confronted with their astonishing claims, as the advertising insert you find with the product states: "These new Stem Cell emulsions are changing everything:"

She says that there is merely confusion around whether this product actually contains stem cells, "which it does not" she admitted.

Ohh. What then? During the same conversation she says Voss Laboratories "focuses exclusively on stem cell technology." But the product Amatokin "highlights" the stem cells found in skin.

And what does Highlighting mean, since there is not medical or structural change in the body termed highlighting.
Nor are there any stem cells in any wrinkle and skin care products that use stem cells.

The product insert says that the stem cell emulsions actually rejuvenate your skin by awakening your body's own reservoir of undifferentiated Stem Cells.

But the real definition of stem cells can be quickly googled. Here is a definition of Stem Cells from MedTerms:

Definition of Stem Cell

Stem cell: One of the human body's master cells, with the ability to grow into any one of the body's more than 200 cell types.

All stem cells are unspecialized (undifferentiated) cells that are characteristically of the same family type (lineage). They retain the ability to divide throughout life and give rise to cells that can become highly specialized and take the place of cells that die or are lost.

Stem cells contribute to the body's ability to renew and repair its tissues. Unlike mature cells, which are permanently committed to their fate, stem cells can both renew themselves as well as create new cells of whatever tissue they belong to (and other tissues).

Bone marrow stem cells, for example, are the most primitive cells in the marrow. From them all the various types of blood cells are descended. Bone marrow stem-cell transfusions (or transplants) were originally given to replace various types of blood cells.

Stem cells from bone marrow can also, quite remarkably, give rise to non-marrow cells. In a 1999 report in the journal Nature, scientists from Boston led by Dr. Louis M. Kunkel reported that they gave bone marrow transplants from normal mice to dystrophic mice. Some 12 weeks later about 10% of the muscle fibers in the diseased animals were making the correct form of dystrophin, the protein that is defective in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This work suggests that bone marrow stem cells may offer new ways of treating muscular dystrophy (and other non-blood diseases).

They are not found on the surface of the skin which is the depository of the dead skin cells that we are sloughing off. And this cream, like all skin creams is not going to penetrate much deeper than that layer of dead cells.

Once again, another skin cream manufacturer is asking the customer to buy into malarkey dressed as scientific fact. http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/17193.html amused public cartoonmayhem 6220295 0 http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/16900.html Wed, 02 Jul 2008 12:51:34 GMT Entangelment of Matter Amplifies Energy Upon Anihilation With Anti-matter? http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/16900.html i hope this is an apropriate place to ask this, i have a question about the mass and gravitational effects of entangeled particles.

Essentialy, i have been led to believe that entangeled particles are the exact same matter, the same mass, occupying different space (premiss), and though what happens to it in one space also effects it in the other space, what happens to the field(s, electromagnetic, gravitational, whatever) that surround it(with it as their source)?

Because it seems to me that this would have an effect of increasing gravity, though not about one specific point, but in general.

Likewise, if the mass at one point was annihalated, by anti-matter, would energy be released at both points?

Would energy then be increased in the universe, or would energy be divided between them? and if that was the case, we could not know how much energy would be released from a matter-antimatter collision because we would not know if the particle was entangeled with some far off matter somewhere else in the universe?

All Serious comments appreciated, and whatever science that negates these issues muchly apreciated.

thanks. http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/16900.html public jonamo_cat 2508354 10 http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/16878.html Sat, 28 Jun 2008 20:10:01 GMT Clinically Proven to Annoy The Hell Out of Me http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/16878.html Clinically Proven!! The two most annoying words used in advertising today. It's called, creatively enough, Bust-Up Gum. If the name isn't enough to tell you what it's supposed to do, the graphic used on the packaging makes it even more obvious:

100 pieces of the gum sells for US $50, which is some pretty pricey chew. Having heard about this particularly outrageous claim, I had to go look at the FAQ to see how it's supposed to work. I mean, it's not like just any gum makes boobs grow. According to the info given by the distributor, results begin after two months of chewing 8 pieces of gum per day. In other words, $50 doesn't even buy an effective dose (it will take 480 pieces of gum, or $240 worth, before anything is even supposed to happen). Better still, those results aren't supposed to be permanent! Once the breasts have reached desired size, the newly-jiggly chewer can reduce their usage to a maintenance dosage, which is half the growth dose. That means spending about $150/month to prevent shrinkage. Nowhere in the FAQ is it explained why the gum has this effect.

However, I found this page, where it is explained that the active ingredient is a plant extract (it's always a plant extract with this sort of snake oil) from Pueraria mirifica, a plant "in the kudzu family." The plant does, indeed, contain a pair of potent estrogen-like compounds, miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol. These are under scientific investigation, in fact, for use in hormone replacement therapy... and here's the key to why this gum could kill you. If the gum really does contain these compounds, it should not be used without close medical supervision. A woman using this stuff is very likely to be raising her risk of heart disease or stroke, not to mention the possibility of a number of cancers.

All in all, what we've got here is snake oil at its worst. Not only is the stuff absolutely not going to cause an appreciable increase in bust size, but it poses a significant health risk. It's nothing more than a bunch of scam artists preying on women's insecurities about their appearance. This is about as low and loathsome as it gets.

I've admitted it before, and have no problem admitting it again... I'm a hopeless boob-junkie. I make no pretense about this; I love breasts as much as anybody on the planet. As far as I'm concerned, the words "breasts" and "too big" can never appear in the same sentence. If there were a legitimate product that could safely increase bust size, I would be the first guy jumping up and down and trumpeting its merits. The thing is, there isn't, and there isn't likely to ever be one. For every guy with a bit of a fetish like mine, there's one at the opposite end of the spectrum. There's really no point at all for women to even worry about this sort of thing (unless, of course, you really want to attract me in particular, in which case you're going to piss LL right off!). But they will, and there will always be nasty bastards like the ones hawking Bust-Up Gum to take advantage of that fact.

And for that very reason, I think that these "herbal supplements" need to be regulated. By not producing a refined chemical, but instead a "plant extract," the pushers of snake oil get away with doing this sort of thing. The chemicals in question, however, are exactly the same; it's only the degree to whcih they're removed from their source matrix that differs, and in terms of effects, that rarely makes any difference at all.

This stuff isn't a supplement, it's poison, pure and simple. http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/13730.html public vyoma 134681 1 http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/13367.html Thu, 19 Apr 2007 10:40:46 GMT Magnet therapy http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/13367.html I just sent an email to a company called Zarifeh. You are selling costume jewellery marked up in price because it contains cheap magnets, not because they look attractive but because you are telling people they will find relief from their ailments.

Many sellers of pseudoscientific cures are careful to not present any falsifiable claims, however, you state boldly, "Magnets help to increase the circulation, promote well-being, relieve pain and reduce stress" - a claim which can be easily tested, and whenever it has been tested it has been proved false: see Collacott et al, 2000 or Ratterman et al, 2002, or the BMJ, January 2006. Apparently vibrations in the Bakelite potentiometer knob can produce a qualitative reduction in the quality of the sound of your system, whereas lacquered Beech has a much more favourable profile. Now, the stupidity should be obvious here: unless you've got it on an isolation platform on a par with a a scanning tunnelling microscope, the system as a whole is going to be bombarded with vibrations of far higher magnitude than those passing through that knob. And even if you could eliminate vibrations completely, the presence of a listener in your room is going to have an effect of far higher magnitude than microscopically vibrating components in the signal path. (Prediction: some fad for supercooling components to remove quantum mechanical vibrations in the future).

Okay, so it's a bit extreme, but it's got a bit of luxury and taste about it. Wouldn't you want a lacquered wood volume knob on your $20,000 sound system? Well, the knob's the tip of the iceberg. It's symbolic of a whole heap of voodoo. Let's take a look:

The brilliant pebbles.

"What the heck is it? Brilliant Pebbles is a unique room & system tuning device for audio systems and satellite TV. Well I, for one, would like to know just what the heck these mechanisms are. The guy behind these (and the Tru-Tone Duplex Covers, below) is a Bachelor in Aerospace Engineering so it's some kind of wonder that his discussion of solid state chemistry is utter science salad. These pebbles are apparently incredibly efficient at absorbing both acoustic energy and radio frequency EM, and there's no explanation given for where this energy goes once the rocks convert it into heat. It's preposterous. Of course, it's possible that putting a big jar of rocks behind your speakers and in the corners of your room will improve audio, but you've got to wonder whether the choice of rocks matters. In fact the obvious question is whether placing any sufficiently heavy object behind your speakers will improve bass response (by reflection) or indeed placing wall hangings in the corners to reduce harmonics (audiophiles are strangely ignorant of the environmental aspects of acoustics, presumably because it can be rectified in a cheap and low-tech manner, which goes against the ritual).

Tru-Tone Duplex Covers

They don't even bother trying to explain how these work, but apparently it's dependent on not screwing them to the wall too tightly. They're plastic plates for your wall sockets.

The Clever Little Clock:

"The Clever Little Clock is a small, battery-powered alarm clock that has been extensively modified using a number of highly-specialized techniques. The Clever Little Clock does not plug into the wall and has no direct or indirect influence on the "audio signal" per use -- not on house wiring, audio components, cables, interconnects, power cords or acoustic waves in the room. Yet the Clock has a pronounced affect on the sound produced by all digital and analog playback systems. In addition, all video systems/formats in the house will be improved by placing one or two clocks in the listening room; the video picture will be clearer, with better contrast and color saturation -- TV, cable TV, DVD, etc.

Remove the Clock from its clear bubble pack and place it anywhere in the listening room. The sound will be considerably more musical and live-sounding -- there will be less distortion, more information and a deeper, more coherent soundstage. Low frequencies will be articulate, extended and dynamic, high frequencies exceptionally smooth with phenomenal inner detail. In other words, More of Everything!!"

This really does take audiophile voodoo to credulity-stretching levels. Were its inventor not a card-carrying quack, I would've written it off as parody. But no, it's true, they're selling a generic battery alarm clock with an orange sticker on it for $199:

Once again, the mechanism by which it functions is shrouded in mystery. Do not question the shaman.

In summary

That is really what bothers me about it: these people are so dedicated to getting the result they want, that they'll delude themselves, and they can be easily manipulated for profit. There's the occasional awful attempt to justify whatever they're prattling on about through a twisted pseudoscience, which is also met with instant credulity. These people utterly lack (or willingly suspend) the ability to critically assess information, and that's not just unscientific, it's a terribly naive way to live your life. Science! http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/12924.html for your consideration....

DNA Report -- by Greg Braden

Below are three astonishing experiments with DNA which proves that
DNA can heal itself according to the "feelings" of the individual as
reported recently by Gregg Braden. In his recent program entitled
Healing Hearts/Healing Nations: The Science of Peace and the Power
of Prayer, Gregg Braden discussed how in the past we lost huge
amounts of information from ancient spiritual traditions (when the
library at Alexandria burned we lost at least 532,000 documents),
and that there may be information in those traditions which could
help us understand some of the mysteries of science. To this end he
reported on three very interesting experiments. Gregg Braden started
off as a scientist and engineer, before he began pursuing these
larger questions.

EXPERIMENT #1

The first experiment reported was done by Dr.Vladimir Poponin, a
quantum biologist. In this experiment, first a container was emptied
(i.e. a vacuum was created within it), and then the only thing left
photons (particles of light) they measured the distribution (ie the
location) of the photons and found they were completely random
inside the container. This was the expected result.

Then some DNA was placed inside the container and the distribution
(location) of the photons was remeasured. This time the photons were
LINED UP in an ORDERED way and aligned with the DNA. In other words
the physical DNA had an effect on the non- physical photons.

After that, the DNA was removed from the container, and the
distribution of the photons was measured again. The photons REMAINED
ORDERED and lined up where the DNA had been. What are the light
particles connected to?

Gregg Braden says we are forced to accept the possibility that some
NEW field of energy, a web of energy, is there and the DNA is
communicating with the photons through this energy.

EXPERIMENT #2

These were experiments done by the military. Leukocytes (white blood
cells) were collected for DNA from donors and placed into chambers
so they could measure electrical changes. In this experiment, the
donor was placed in one room and subjected to "emotional
stimulation" consisting of video clips, which generated different
emotions in the donor. The DNA was placed in a different room in the
same building. Both the donor and his DNA were monitored and as the
donor exhibited emotional peaks or valleys (measured by electrical
responses), the DNA exhibited the IDENTICAL RESPONSES AT THE EXACT
SAME TIME. There was no lag time, no transmission time. The DNA
peaks and valleys EXACTLY MATCHED the peaks and valleys of the donor
in time.

The military wanted to see how far away they could separate the
donor from his DNA and still get this effect. They stopped testing
after they separated the DNA and the donor by 50 miles and STILL had
the SAME result. No lag time; no transmission time.

The DNA and the donor had the same identical responses in time. What
can this mean? Gregg Braden says it means that living cells
communicate through a previously unrecognized form of energy. This
energy is not affected by time and distance. This is a non- local
form of energy, an energy that already exists everywhere, all the
time.

EXPERIMENT #3

The third experiment was done by the Institute of Heart Math and the
paper that was written about this was titled: Local and Non local
Effects of Coherent Heart Frequencies on Conformational Changes of
DNA. (Disregard the title! The info is incredible.)

This is the experiment that relates directly to the anthrax
situation. In this experiment, some human placenta DNA (the most
pristine form of DNA) was placed in a container from which they
could measure changes in the DNA. Twenty-eight vials of DNA were
given (one each) to 28 trained researchers. Each researcher had been
trained how to generate and FEEL feelings, and they each had strong
emotions.

What was discovered was that the DNA CHANGED ITS SHAPE according to
the feelings of the researchers:

1. When the researchers FELT gratitude, love and appreciation, the
DNA responded by RELAXING and the strands unwound. The length of the
DNA became longer.

2. When the researchers FELT anger, fear, frustration, or stress,
the DNA responded by TIGHTENING UP. It became shorter and SWITCHED
OFF many of our DNA codes! If you've ever felt "shut down" by
negative emotions, now you know why your body was equally shut down
too. The shut down of the DNA codes was reversed and the codes were
switched back on again when feelings of love, joy, gratitude and
appreciation were felt by the researchers.

This experiment was later followed up by testing HIV positive
patients. They discovered that feelings of love, gratitude and
appreciation created 300,000 TIMES the RESISTANCE they had without
those feelings. So here's the answer to what can help you stay well,
no matter what dreadful virus or bacteria may be floating around.
Stay in feelings of joy, love, gratitude and appreciation!

These emotional changes went beyond the effects of electro-
magnetics. Individuals trained in deep love were able to change the
shape of their DNA. Gregg Braden says this illustrates a new
recognized form of energy that connects all of creation. This energy
appears to be a TIGHTLY WOVEN WEB that connects all matter.
Essentially we're able to influence this web of creation through our
VIBRATION.

SUMMARY:

What do the results of these experiments have to do with our present
situation? This is the science behind how we can choose a timeline
to stay safe, no matter what else is happening. As Gregg explains in
The Isaiah Effect, basically time is not just linear (past, present
and future), but it also has depth. The depth of time consists of
all the possible prayers and timelines that could ever be prayed or
exist. Essentially, all our prayers have already been answered. We
just activate the one we're living through our FEELINGS.

THIS is how we create our reality - by choosing it with our
feelings. Our feelings are activating the timeline via the web of
creation, which connects all of the energy and matter of the
Universe.

Remember that the law of the Universe is that we attract what we
focus on. If you are focused on fearing whatever may come, you are
sending a strong message to the Universe to send you whatever you
fear. Instead if you can get yourself into feelings of joy, love,
appreciation or gratitude, and focus on bringing more of that into your life, you
are going to avoid the negative stuff automatically.

You will be choosing a different TIMELINE with your feelings.

You can prevent getting anthrax or any other flu, virus, etc, by
staying in these positive feelings, which maintains an incredibly
strong immune system.

So here's your protection for whatever comes: Find something to be
happy about every day, and every hour if possible, moment-to-
moment, even if only for a few minutes. This is the easiest and best
protection you can have. If nothing else, be joyous that the
criminals have "already been caught" by the Universe!

Gregg Braden is the author of the following books
"Awakening to Zero Point"
"Walking Between the Worlds: The Science of Compassion"
"The Isaiah Effect"

http://www.greggbraden.com http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/12924.html public seonaidh 632739 2 http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/12708.html Mon, 13 Nov 2006 21:11:21 GMT Welcome to the world of nanomicrons and beyond! http://community.livejournal.com/shampooscience/12708.html I recently had reason to dig up this bunch of con-artists' URL.
